A newlywed couple holding hands as husband and wife

Kelsey and Drew crossed paths while participating in volunteer work at the Toledo Zoo. Although they belonged to different friend circles, there were occasions when their paths overlapped, leading to frequent hangouts. From the start of their friendship, Drew harbored strong feelings for Kelsey, while it took her a few additional years to realize her own deep affection for him.

Over time, their lives took different directions as Kelsey focused on completing high school and finding her career path. When she turned 18 and graduated from the ZooTeen volunteer program, she began teaching summer camps where Drew continued to volunteer. This rekindled their connection, and they started spending a significant amount of time together, gradually falling in love without even realizing it.

On Christmas Day, Drew’s mom and step dad came over to open gifts. Drew didn’t seem nervous at all to Kelsey, so when he said he had one final gift, she didn’t think twice. When Kelsey opened the gift it was a customized Toledo Walleye jersey with his last name and their number (31, it’s our anniversary date added up 7.10.14) on the back of it. Kelsey was taken by surprise that it had HIS last name on it because, as she said, “why would I want to wear that?” In her words, she said, “I held the jersey up and looked it over but never saw the ring that was hanging from the front of the jersey. I said thank you and folded it up and set it aside. At this point he’s starting the laugh and held it back up for me to look at again, saying “just LOOK at it!”. I finallllllly saw the ring and when I looked up he asked me to marry him!”

Their wedding was so picture perfect and featured nods to their love of birds and a gorgeous spring color palette for flowers and attire. As a former ZooTeen myself, it was so nice to see so many former ZooTeens there as well and their officiant, Bill Davis, is in charge of all of the ZooTeens and saw Kelsey and Drew’s relationship form in it’s infancy. It was an incredible day to be a part of and I am so excited for all the future has to offer these two. Congratulations, Kelsey and Drew!
